This 2 day training course will provide participants who work with young children with the necessary skills and knowledge to safely administer first aid procedures.

Objectives

On completion of the course candidates will be able to: understand and follow an emergency action plan, perform CPR on a junior and a baby, recognise and perform first aid procedures when dealing with accidents and emergencies involving young people.

The course includes 12 hours contact time, which is required by Ofsted, and each participant will be given a Qualsafe accredited Paediatric First Aid certificate. Both days must be attended in order to qualify.

Course Content – Day 1 –  Wednesday 24th April

Times : 9am – 3.30pm

  • Introduction and documentation
  • Incident and Casualty Assessment
  • The Role of the Paediatric First Aider
  • School Policy on giving Medication by First Aiders
  • Accident Reporting
  • Assessment of Emergency Situations and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on a junior, baby and adult
  • How to use AED safely (defibrillator)
  • Unconsciousness: secondary survey, recovery position
  • Management of a seizure
  • Airway and Breathing Problems: choking child and baby
  • Wounds and bleeding: types of wound and treatment
  • Catastrophic bleeding / tourniquet
  • Shock: recognition and treatment
  • Recognition and Treatment of Anaphylaxis
  • How to use an Epipen

 

Course Content – Day 2 – Wednesday 1st May

Times : 9am – 3.30pm

  • Fractures, Dislocations and Slings
  • Head, Neck and Back injuries
  • Ear, Nose and Eye conditions
  • Recognition and Management of Chronic Conditions
  • Medical Conditions: Sickle Cell Syndrome, Diabetes, Asthma, Meningitis
  • Febrile Convulsions
  • Extremes of Heat and Cold
  • Recognition and management of Burns and Scalds
  • Recognition and treatment of Electric Shock
  • Dangers and management of Poisonous Substances: recognition and treatment
  • Bites and Stings: complications and treatment
  • Theory test and practical assessment
